Between Home and Homeless

A new season is here…Fall. The trees experience big changes that we can see develop before our eyes. One day it’s a green tree, the next day it is covered in yellow or red leaves. It seems like an overnight change, but physical events, such as less sunlight, cause the leaves to go through their annual “senescence” preparing for dormancy. Before long, the tree is left leafless, and naked. We can see every branch outlined against the sky. It looks small and exposed to the storms, wind and snow. Nothing is hidden.

You may feel like a leafless tree today. Exposed, cold, nowhere to hide.

Things in your life may have turned out different than you expected, or maybe you’re in a holding pattern…unsure of the next step.

I have felt this way before…in fact, I feel this way today.

November is a month of change for me. Our future home is being prepared for us, and our present home is waiting to become someone else’s home. I’m in limbo…boxes are packed, walls are bare, I drive away and come back every day…waiting.

Have you ever been in limbo? Between home and homeless?

Moving is our choice this time. No company transfer, or school moves, just our decision to make a change for our future. Everyone asks Why? We are the only ones who know our reasons, and they make sense to us. We’re not going far…just 10 minutes away, but it seems like a drastic decision to a few.

Have you ever made a decision that didn’t make sense to some people? How did you handle their questions?

Change, is the reason. That’s all. No one can understand your mind, and that’s OK. You do what makes sense to your life.

It didn’t come fast or easy to make a change. A year of prayer, research, discussing and discussing pro’s and con’s, all bring us to November. The month of change…for trees, and for me.

What’s next, you ask? A new place to set down roots, grow new leaves, and bear fruit.

Just like the trees will do. Over and over, and over and over. With each new year, the tree grows a new life ring. So will I. I have many life rings…61 so far. Each one means change, growth, wisdom, and life.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 says, ”But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes: its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” NIV

How do you make life decisions?

My confidence is in Him, as the verse says. Planted by a stream of constant nourishment. Knowing that fruit will come in time.
